Articles ও Prepositions

ব্যাংক পরীক্ষার English-এ fill-in-the-blank প্রশ্নের সবচেয়ে বড় দুই উৎস — article আর preposition। প্রশ্ন ছোট, সময় লাগে কম, কিন্তু ফাঁদও সবচেয়ে সূক্ষ্ম: ‘a university’ না ‘an university’? ‘in Monday’ না ‘on Monday’? এই পাঠে নিয়মগুলোর পেছনের যুক্তি (বিশেষত ‘বানান নয়, উচ্চারণ’ নীতি এবং at-in-on-এর জ্যামিতি) ধরিয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে — যুক্তি ধরলে শত শত উদাহরণ আলাদা করে মুখস্থ লাগে না।

Articles হচ্ছে noun-এর আগে ব্যবহৃত নির্দিষ্ট/অনির্দিষ্ট নির্দেশক — ‘a’, ‘an’, ‘the’।

Preposition অংশে at/in/on ছক আগে, তারপর Appropriate Preposition তালিকা রোজ ১৫টি করে। প্রতিটি নতুন নিয়ম শেখার পর MCQ ব্যাংক থেকে মিলিয়ে ২-৩টি প্রশ্ন করুন — শেখা তখনই আটকায়।

Articles — Two Types

  • Indefinite Article: a, an (অনির্দিষ্ট কোনো একটি)
  • Definite Article: the (নির্দিষ্ট)

‘A / An’ — Indefinite Articles

‘A’ ও ‘An’ — একই অর্থে, ‘একটি/একজন/কোনো একটা’। তবে ব্যবহারে পার্থক্য আছে।

Basic Rule

  • ‘A’ — consonant-sound দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া শব্দের আগে: a book, a boy, a university, a one-eyed man, a European
  • ‘An’ — vowel-sound দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া শব্দের আগে: an apple, an hour, an honest man, an MA, an MP, an SOS, an X-ray, an FIR

Special Notes

  • ‘University’ → ‘a’ (sound = ‘yu’ = consonant)
  • ‘Honest, Hour, Heir, Honour’ → ‘an’ (silent ‘h’)
  • ‘One-eyed, One-rupee’ → ‘a’ (sound = ‘wun’)
  • ‘MA, MP, MBBS, FIR, SOS, X-ray’ → ‘an’ (vowel-sound)
  • ‘BA, BSc, BBA, B.Ed.’ → ‘a’ (consonant ‘B’)
‘MP’ পড়ি ‘এম-পি’ — শুরুতে ‘এ’ (vowel) → an MP; ‘BA’ পড়ি ‘বি-এ’ — শুরুতে ‘ব’ → a BA। কৌশল: শব্দটা জোরে উচ্চারণ করুন — প্রথম ধ্বনিটাই উত্তর; বানান ভুলে যান।

Uses of A/An

  1. Singular countable noun — first time mentioned: I saw a man.
  2. Means ‘one’ — a hundred, a thousand
  3. Means ‘per/each’ — twice a week, 60 km an hour
  4. Before a noun representing class — A cow is a useful animal.
  5. Before profession — He is a doctor.
  6. Before proper noun used as common — He is a Newton (genius).
  7. In exclamatory sentences — What a beautiful flower! Such a fine day!

‘The’ — Definite Article

‘The’ ব্যবহৃত হয় নির্দিষ্ট, পূর্বে উল্লিখিত, বা অনন্য কোনো বস্তু/ব্যক্তির আগে।

Major Uses of ‘The’

  1. Already mentioned: I saw a boy. The boy was crying.
  2. Unique objects/places: the sun, the moon, the earth, the sky, the world, the universe, the equator
  3. Superlatives: the best, the most beautiful, the tallest
  4. Ordinal numbers: the first, the second, the third
  5. Names of rivers/seas/oceans/gulfs: the Padma, the Ganges, the Atlantic, the Bay of Bengal, the Pacific, the Suez Canal
  6. Mountain ranges: the Himalayas, the Andes, the Alps (but: Mt. Everest, Mt. Fuji — single peaks)
  7. Island groups: the West Indies, the Philippines, the Maldives
  8. Plural country names: the United States, the Netherlands, the UAE, the UK
  9. Deserts/forests: the Sahara, the Thar, the Amazon
  10. Holy books/religious works: the Quran, the Bible, the Vedas, the Gita
  11. Newspapers/journals: the Daily Star, the Times, the Prothom Alo
  12. Ships/aeroplanes/trains: the Titanic, the Concorde, the Padma Express
  13. Musical instruments: the guitar, the piano, the violin (when playing)
  14. Adjective used as noun (class): the rich, the poor, the blind, the deaf, the dead
  15. Parts of body (with possession): He caught me by the hand. He hit me on the head.
  16. Historical events/periods: the French Revolution, the Renaissance, the Middle Ages, the Liberation War
  17. Government/Institutions: the President, the Prime Minister, the Government, the BNP
  18. Direction: the north, the south, the east, the west
  19. Buildings (some): the White House, the Taj Mahal, the Pentagon, the Statue of Liberty
  20. Comparatives (with ‘the’ ... ‘the’): The more, the merrier. The higher you go, the cooler it feels.

Zero Article (No Article)

কিছু ক্ষেত্রে article ব্যবহার করা হয় না — তখন ‘Zero Article’ বলা হয়।

Where to omit articles

  • Proper nouns: Rahim is honest. Dhaka is the capital.
  • Names of meals: I had breakfast. (কিন্তু ‘a hearty breakfast’ হলে ‘a’)
  • Names of subjects/games: I love mathematics. He plays cricket.
  • Plural & uncountable nouns in general sense: Honesty is the best policy. Books are friends.
  • Names of languages: He speaks Bengali/English.
  • Names of single mountains/lakes: Mt. Everest, Lake Superior
  • Most country names: Bangladesh, India, China (exceptions: the USA, the UK)
  • Means of transport with ‘by’: by bus, by train, by car, by plane
  • Days, months, festivals: on Monday, in May, at Eid
  • Common phrases: at home, in bed, at school, in hospital, in prison, at church (when used for primary purpose)
  • Before titles + name: President Biden, Dr. Rahim, Professor Hawking
  • ‘School, college, hospital, church, bed, prison’ when meaning primary purpose: He went to school. But when referring to building/visit: I went to the school to meet the teacher.
ধাপে ধাপে: “He was sent to ___ prison” বনাম “His mother went to ___ prison to see him”
ধাপ ১: প্রশ্ন করুন — ব্যক্তিটি জায়গাটির মূল উদ্দেশ্যে গেছে, নাকি ভবনটিতে গেছে?
ধাপ ২: ‘sent to prison’ = শাস্তি পেতে (মূল উদ্দেশ্য) → zero article: to prison ✓
ধাপ ৩: মা গেছেন দেখা করতে — বন্দি হতে নয়; তিনি গেছেন ভবনে → the prison ✓
একই সূত্র: go to school (পড়তে) / go to the school (মিটিং-এ); in hospital (রোগী হয়ে) / at the hospital (দেখতে); go to bed (ঘুমাতে) / sit on the bed (আসবাবে)।
দেশ-নামের ফাঁদ: the লাগবে কেবল বহুবচন/সংঘ-জাতীয় নামে — the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, the UAE, the Philippines। সাধারণ নামে নয়: Bangladesh, India, France (‘the Bangladesh’ ✗)। কিন্তু নদী-সাগর-মরুভূমি-পর্বতমালায় সবসময় the — the Padma, the Sahara, the Himalayas; আর একক পর্বত/হ্রদে the নেই — Mt. Everest, Lake Superior। "জল ও দল-এ the, একক-এ নয়" — এভাবে মনে রাখুন।

সাধারণ ভুল ও সতর্কতা

ভুল ১ — অক্ষর দেখে a/an: ‘an university’ ✗ (উচ্চারণ ‘ইউ’), ‘a hour’ ✗ (h নীরব), ‘a MP’ ✗ (‘এম’)। সবসময় উচ্চারণ করে দেখুন — a European, a one-taka note, an honest man, an FIR।
ভুল ২ — uncountable-এর আগে a/an: ‘an advice’, ‘a furniture’, ‘an information’ ✗ — a piece of advice ✓। কিন্তু বিশেষণ-সহ নির্দিষ্ট রূপে ‘a’ ফিরে আসতে পারে: ‘a good knowledge of English’।
ভুল ৩ — superlative-এ the বাদ: ‘He is best boy’ ✗ → the best। আর comparative-এ of the two হলে-ও the: ‘He is the better of the two brothers.’
ভুল ৪ — ‘by bus’ পরিবারে article: by bus, by train, by air, on foot — article নেই; কিন্তু নির্দিষ্ট যানে: ‘in a taxi’, ‘on the 5 o’clock train’। ‘by a bus’ ✗।
ভুল ৫ — preposition-এর পরে verb-রূপ: preposition-এর পরে verb এলে সবসময় gerund (V-ing): ‘He is good at swimming’ (at swim/to swim ✗), ‘insisted on going’। ব্যতিক্রম ‘to’-infinitive-এর to — সেটি preposition নয়।
ভুল ৬ — enter/discuss/reach-এর পরে অকারণ preposition: ‘enter into the room’ ✗ → enter the room; ‘discuss about’ ✗ → discuss the matter; ‘reach at Dhaka’ ✗ → reach Dhaka; ‘order for’ ✗ → order the goods। এরা transitive — সরাসরি object নেয়।

দ্রুত সমাধানের কৌশল

কৌশল ১ — article-প্রশ্নের ৩-ধাপ অ্যালগরিদম: (১) noun-টা কি নির্দিষ্ট/আগে-উল্লেখিত/অনন্য? → the। (২) না হলে — countable singular? → a/an (উচ্চারণ শুনে)। (৩) plural বা uncountable সাধারণ অর্থে? → কিছুই না (zero)। এই ক্রমে ভাবলে ৯০% article-প্রশ্ন মিটে যায়।
কৌশল ২ — the-লাগা নামের ছড়া: "নদী-সাগর-মরু-পর্বতমালা, দ্বীপপুঞ্জ-জোট-পত্রিকা-জাহাজ-ধর্মগ্রন্থ — সবার আগে the বসাও ভালা" — the Padma, the Pacific, the Sahara, the Himalayas, the Maldives, the UN, the Times, the Titanic, the Quran। উল্টো তালিকা (the নেই): ভাষা, খেলা, খাবার, রোগ, একক পাহাড়-হ্রদ, সাধারণ দেশ।
কৌশল ৩ — appropriate preposition-এর অর্থ-সূত্র: বাংলা অনুবাদের বিভক্তিই প্রায়ই preposition বলে দেয় — ‘কিছু থেকে বিরত’ = abstain from; ‘কিছুর প্রতি আসক্ত’ = addicted to; ‘কারও সাথে পরিচিত’ = acquainted with; ‘কিছুর জন্য বিখ্যাত’ = famous for। আগে বাংলায় ভাবুন, তারপর মিলান।
কৌশল ৪ — phrasal verb পড়ুন particle ধরে: verb ধরে নয়, particle-এর ভাব ধরে দল বানান — up = শেষ/পূর্ণ (give up, use up, break up), out = বাইরে/নিঃশেষ (put out, die out, break out), off = বিচ্ছিন্ন (put off, call off, see off), into = ভেতরে/তদন্ত (look into, run into)। নতুন phrasal verb-ও তখন আন্দাজ করা যায়।
